On 5 June 2019 in Nay Pyi Taw, the CEO of METRO Wholesale Myanmar, Jens Michel participated as a panelist for Anti-Illicit Trade Panel discussion and Agrobusiness Panel discussion at Myanmar-EU Economic Forum. The conference provided a platform for business leaders and policy makers from Myanmar and Europe to interact and debate key business and trade issues.
During the Anti-Illicit Trade Panel, Mr. Michel’s topics of discussion included the benefits, opportunities and challenges from Wholesales & Retails Licenses for foreign companies the Government had facilitated. He also highlighted that untaxed, illegal imports could harm the livelihood of local farmers, potentially sabotaging the growth of the domestic farming sector.
For the Agrobusiness Panel, Mr. Michel elaborated on the cold chain process, stating that it needs improvement to ensure a reliably high standard for meat, fruit and vegetables. He mentioned the need for better farming practises and techniques for fruits and vegetables, as well as promoted the use of international animal husbandry techniques to produce consistent products and improve yields. Mr. Michel summarized that to improve food safety knowledge for both suppliers as well as B2B partners is one of the main objectives for METRO Wholesale Myanmar.
